Alex Murdaugh's defense team just filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Becky Hill — and the goal isn't just accountability. It's investigation. The Section 1983 claim alleges Hill deprived Murdaugh of his constitutional right to a fair trial before an untampered jury. The South Carolina Supreme Court already found her conduct warranted a new trial. Now the defense wants civil discovery — subpoenas, depositions, sworn testimony — to find out exactly what she did, how she did it, and whether anyone helped. Jim Griffin raised the central question at the press conference: was Becky Hill a lone wolf? The complaint specifically highlights the suspicious removal of juror Myra Crosby — the so-called egg lady — as a critical incident demanding deeper scrutiny. The team is seeking more than six hundred thousand dollars in damages connected to the cost of the original trial. They stressed none of it goes to Murdaugh personally — every dollar flows to the receivership. The defense also took aim at the state's investigation. They argue the state never thoroughly examined Hill's conduct, never treated it as the constitutional violation it was, and never followed the evidence wherever it might lead. This federal suit is designed to go where the state would not. That lawsuit is one piece of a broader defense strategy heading into the retrial. The Supreme Court's ruling handed Harpootlian and Griffin a roadmap. The financial evidence firewall is the most obvious advantage — the court expressed clear skepticism about twelve hours of financial testimony, and the defense will challenge every piece armed with the court's own published language. No DNA on Murdaugh. No blood. Both weapons still missing. No eyewitnesses. A compromised crime scene. Those gaps got buried under the financial narrative the first time.
